Over mijn onderzoek

Populair wetenschappelijk:

For the Linkedin page of the Leadership section that I am part of at the VU, I wrote the following profile about my research (August 2025):

Meet our Section: Tabitha van Krimpen
I am a PhD student at VU Amsterdam and also the Protestant Theological University (PThU) via a Joint Doctorate construction. My PhD research focuses on moral leadership and moral courage and specifically the question of why people in organizations stand up to speak about moral issues they care for, even when they take a big risk by doing so. Next to research, I also enjoy teaching Business Administration students and being a thesis supervisor on leadership related topics. It is a privilege to work at a university, a school (Greek: scholè, meaning ‘leisure’) where I get the opportunity to follow my curiosity for four years, read and learn a lot and can also make a contribution to the scholarly discussion on leadership.

Person: What sparked your interest in leadership research?
When working in the field of leadership, you immediately touch upon other fields, such as psychology, sociology and philosophy: How did the leader became who she is now? What is the influence of how organizations are structured for the way in which people work together? What dilemmas do leaders aiming to be ethical face? I’m interested in tensions within organizations, paradoxes, the dark side of leadership and am inspired by the work of for example Gareth Morgan, Mats Alvesson and Manfred Kets de Vries. By the way, the field could use more female management theorists, in my view ;)

Purpose: What real-world problem does your research help solve?
My research hopefully helps to understand why people show moral courage and how their underlying disposition of values, character and view on life plays an important role in this. With my interdisciplinary research in both leadership and in theology I hope to contribute to new perspectives on leadership and why moral leadership matters.

Perspective: What’s one surprising thing you’ve learned about leadership?
How many different leaderships styles scholars come up with ;) Moral, ethical, spiritual, responsible, authentic, servant leadership, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Leadership studies suffers from ‘adjectivism’, as prof. dr. Ben Kuipers (Leiden University) said. It also surprised me how sensitive the field is to trends and how there is a tendency to romanticize leadership and make leaders into heroes. There is an interesting article about this ‘Zombie leadership: Dead ideas that still walk among us’ by Haslam, Alvesson & Reicher (2024).
